project story

context

GRUNER&FRIENDS designed the villa “Via Miranda” in Monte Brè. The charming villages are situated above the towns of Locarno and Ascona. The 5-star Hotel Resort Borgo Miranda, also designed by GRUNER&FRIENDS, is also located in Monte Brè.

CONCEPT

Villa Via Miranda was designed in a way that its natural surrounding becomes the supreme asset while the building blends itself in it. The building and landscape merge together without invading the natural environment. The project is inspired by the traditional Swiss alpine architecture and transformed into a modern design. The house is organized on three floors with the shape-changing roof is enlarged towards the front, opening up the view from the living room towards the lake. The villa contributes to the dialogue on nature-based design and, with the surrounding garden, the relationship between natural environment and well-being.

CONTENT

More private uses are located on the level below. The interior design and all furniture are tailored to the owner’s daily routine, which together with the layout provide efficient use of the house considering the mountain slope. The exterior staircase extends on the left side of the villa and becomes a special feature of  the project. The technical solutions and layout proposal aim to answer the rigorous sustainability and durability principles set as part of the design goals: the solar orientation of the living room, the shading of the windows with timber blinds, the use of local natural stone, and the preferential use of timber for both as structure and façade. All of these design decisions make the building a reference in sustainability.
